Shaun Alexander (AP Photo/Kevin P. Casey)No player caused more heartache in fantasy football last year than Shaun Alexander. Fresh off setting the NFL single-season scoring record and winning the 2005 NFL MVP Award, Alexander was a top 3 pick in every 2006 fantasy draft and was supposed to be a point scoring machine. Then in Game 3 of the regular season, the unspeakable happened (you can call it the Madden curse if you want) as Alexander broke his foot. Six games later, most owners found their teams in bad shape and fighting for one of the last playoff spots in their leagues, especially since his backup, Maurice Morris, was very unproductive (which is putting it kindly). Luckily for fantasy owners, 2006 wasn't a total loss for Alexander and he was able to return from the injury to play the final 7 regular season games to help fantasy owners make a playoff push. More over, he was productive in compiling 709 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns during the last 7 games.

Lets take a deeper look into Alexander's career, which may help us predict his future production. From 2001 through 2005, Alexander topped 1175 rushing yards every season with a career high of 1880 yards in 2005. Over the same time frame he also rushed for 87 touchdowns, with 27 coming in 2005. More importantly, the broken foot was the first significant injury of his entire career. Prior to the injury, he had appeared in each of the first 99 regular season games of his career.

The injury last year is mildly concerning, but Alexander insists that he is 100% healthy and feels great. He's been practicing at full-strength and the Seahawks have been extremely careful with him in the preseason games, so his health shouldn't be an issue at the start of the season. When you compare him to the rest of the backs in the league, LaDainian Tomlinson and Steven Jackson are the only backs that I like better. We all know how nasty LT is and Jackson also has the edge over Alexander in my mind because there's absolutely no injury concern and we really don't even know how high his ceiling is yet! We know how great Alexander, who turns 30 years old in a few days (August 30th), can be and there's very little chance that he'll reach his 2005 level ever again. Shaun Alexander appears to be fully healthy, he plays in probably the weakest defensive division in the NFL, and his career numbers speak for themselves. At the end of the day, consider him an elite fantasy performer that should be the 3rd player taken in your draft.

2007 Projected Stat Line: 1478 rushing yards, 17 rushing TDs, 21 receptions, 189 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs
