Yovani Gallardo, Mil SP

By now any of you that are frequent readers of my spotlights have become all-too-familiar with my reference to the Jered Weaver Phenomenon. Well, the focus of my spotlight today could be the best of the bunch! Yovani Gallardo is the top pitching prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization and scouts are saying that he could be better than Homer Bailey, Kevin Slowey, Tim Lincecum, and the rest of the young pitching talent out there. To tell you the truth, if I had my choice of any of them, Gallardo is the guy that I would select based upon all of the reports that I've read about him.

Yovani Gallardo (Getty Images)Lets start with some stats about the 21-year-old Brewers stud. Through 13 starts (and 77.2 innings) at Triple-A Nashville, Yovani has tallied an 8-3 record with a 2.90 ERA and 110 strikeouts. To expand upon the strikeout total, I want to alert you to the fact that 110 K's tops ALL pitchers in the minor leagues! Now the Brewers have called up Gallardo with Chris Capuano hitting the disabled list with a strained left groin. He could be used in the bullpen this week, but more likely than not he'll be starting against the Giants on Monday.

From a fantasy standpoint, this is a guy that you should pick up immediately. You just can't pass on a guy who brings his gas can to the park every outing like Gallardo does. 110 K's in 77.2 innings isn't a fluke and Gallardo could make a valuable addition to your pitching staff. I think you should probably temper your expectations a little bit. Lincecum, Bailey, and the rest have all been touched up somewhat this year, so don't expect Gallardo to pitch like Jake Peavy, but you need to add Gallardo to your roster if he's available in this league. I have a feeling that you won't be disappointed.
