Kevin Slowey, Min SP
Tim Lincecum, Homer Bailey, Yovani Gallardo...now there's Kevin Slowey. Something that I like to call the "Jered Weaver Phenomenon" is continuing to gain steam! You probably remember that Weaver was a highly touted minor league prospect to start 2006 and then he exploded onto the scene after a May call-up with an amazing 11-2 record during his rookie season. Now it seems like every hot pitching prospect in the minors becomes almost a household name even before their call-up! Lincecum was long-gone from the free agent wire in many leagues by the time he was called up on May 6th. Gallardo and Bailey haven't even been called up yet and they're already owned in a lot of leagues! So now I present to you Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Kevin Slowey.
Slowey is scheduled to make his major league debut tonight against the Oakland Athletics and the buzz from his minor league resume is already resonating throughout the fantasy baseball world. The Twins made him their second round pick in the 2005 draft after a stellar college career at Winthrop University. In his final college season, Slowey was 14-2 with a 2.18 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 134 K's in 136.1 innings pitched. People in the Twin Cities are so high on this guy that they are comparing him to former Twins All-Star and Minnesota icon Brad Radke. In New York, that would be the equivalent of comparing a hot young hitter to Mickey Mantle or Joe DiMaggio.
Through nine starts this year with Triple-A Rochester, Slowey is 6-2 with a 1.54 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and three complete games. He gave up only 47 hits and five walks in 64.1 innings and struck out 57 batters. An even more impressive stat, Kevin Slowey has compiled 277 strikeouts with only 35 walks over 285.2 minor league innings! After doing some research, here's the run-down on Slowey's stuff. He is an aggressive pitcher with a fastball that tops out in the low 90's and he possesses pin-point accuracy and control, as evidenced by the minor league stats. Slowey looks to be a great source of strikeouts, he'll be an asset in the WHIP category, and the 5th spot in the rotation belongs solely to Kevin after Ramon Ortiz was demoted to the bullpen. Go to your fantasy leagues and pick up Slowey now if he's available. Don't wait to see how he does tonight because the odds are that one of your buddies is going to beat you to the punch!
