Prior Spotlights:

Sean Marshall, ChC SP

Sean Marshall was called up by the Cubs last week to start for the ineffective Wade Miller. Word out of Chicago is that Miller and Cubs GM Jim Hendry will have a discussion regarding Miller's future with the Cubbies and it may be a release or retirement. That means Marshall will get an opportunity to tie down that 5th spot in the Cubs rotation. While the Cubs have struggled during the first part of the season, the atrocity that is the National League Central, will have them in the race late into the season making Marshall a possible key contributor down the stretch.

Sean Marshall (AP Photo/Jerry Lai)The 6' 7" Marshall is 14-13 with a 2.64 ERA in 44 starts in the Cubs farm system over 3 years. Last season he was 6-11 with a 5.13 ERA in 36 games for the Cubs, resulting in his return to the minors this year. Keep in mind, however, that during his rookie campaign Marshall strained a muscle in his side towards the latter part of the season and returned to post an 8.34 ERA in September.

The mark on Marshall has been his control. During the offseason, he decided to work very diligently to improve that control and it looks as though his efforts are bearing fruit. In 2 games for the Cubs since being recalled, Marshall has put together two solid starts. Against San Diego, he went 7 innings giving up just 4 hits, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs while striking out 8 batters. His second start, against Florida, he managed 6.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs. He struck out 6 more Marlins to push his total to 14 K's on the season.

With a stat line like 2.70 ERA, 14K, 4BB, 13.1IP, fantasy owners have to be happy. Marshall is likely available in your league and would certainly be worth a flier to see if the lefty can continue his success towards a possible breakout season.
