Need help sifting through the big performances from guys on your league's waiver wire to figure out who you want to pick up? Who's going to be the diamond in the rough and who's going to be a one week wonder? The Robin Sports Waiver Wire Gems will give you our take on the week's most noticeable stat lines. The goal of this column is to help you decide between the guys most likely to be available on your free agent wire. Here's how we'll break them down:
Buried Treasure - These guys really have some potential and they're players you should definitely consider adding to your team. The guys listed in the "No Brainers" section are those that I'm betting are already long gone in your league.
Fool's Gold - Don't get caught up in one week of success. These are guys that you'd be better off staying away from.
Lets start with the gems, THE BURIED TREASURE! The Week 8 stat line is in parenthesis.
Buried Treasure
Selvin Young, Den RB - (MNF tonight) Travis Henry did not practice all week and was listed as inactive for tonight's game, which provides an instant boost to Young's value. With Henry likely to be suspended on November 5th, it looks like Young's time has arrived as the Denver feature back. He's a must-add in every fantasy format.
Ryan Grant, GB RB - (MNF tonight) Ryan Grant is seeing the bulk of the carries tonight after starting RB DeShawn Wynn went down with an injury early in the 1st quarter. Grant saw the bulk of the carries with the first team offense anyways this week, so he currently has the most value out of Wynn's backups, Vernand Morency, Brandon Jackson, and Grant. He's worth an addition if you already own any of the Packers running backs.
Vernon Davis, SF TE - (6 rec, 71 rec yds, 1 rec TD) Vernon Davis has finally begun to show some signs of life this season. The performance against the Saints was his best of the season and it bodes well for the road ahead. I'm sure plenty of over-anxious owners dropped him in your leagues, so take advantage.
Adimchinobe Echemandu, Hou RB - (62 rush yds, 2 rec, 11 rec yds) With the surprise absence of Ahman Green after being listed as probable for Sunday's game, the Texans looked to Ron Dayne and AE (that name's way too hard to spell). Dayne got most of the carries early, but was ineffective and gave way to AE. Consider adding AE if you already own Ahman Green as the true reason for Green seems like it hasn't been revealed yet.
Reggie Brown, Phi WR - (8 rec, 105 rec yds) Don't look now, but Brown has finally started to produce like we expected before the season started. He now has 17 catches for 238 yards during his last 3 games. Brown's definitely worth a roster spot if you're weak at wide receiver.
No Brainers: Kenny Watson, Cin RB; Jesse Chatman, Mia RB; LenDale White, Ten RB; Lee Evans, Buf WR
Now let's take a look at THE FOOL'S GOLD
Fool's Gold
Quinn Gray, Jac QB - (100 pass yds, 1 pass TD) One thing is for sure...Gray is definitely no David Garrard. He won't put up big passing yards and he hasn't shown any inclination towards running the football.
Kellen Clemens, NYJ QB - (--) Unless you're in dire straits, Clemens really shouldn't even be showing up on your radar. Rookie QBs rarely ever play with enough consistency to warrant fantasy consideration. Focus your attention more on a guy like Jeff Garcia or Damon Huard.
Jacoby Jones, Hou WR - (5 rec, 51 rec yds) There was a lot of buzz about Jones during the preseason, but he fell off a cliff when the regular season came around. Expect last week to be a fluke, since Kevin Walter and Andre Davis have received the bulk of the attention while Andre Johnson has been down.
JP Losman, Buf QB - (113 pass yds, 1 pass TD) Even if Losman does regain his starting job from rookie QB Trent Edwards, I wouldn't go near him with a 10-foot poll. This touchdown was his first of the season (even though it was his 4th game) and he's only been averagine 92 passing yards per game up until this point. Like I said with Clemens, see if Jeff Garcia or Damon Huard are floating around on your waiver wire.
