Need help sifting through the big performances from guys on your league's waiver wire to figure out who you want to pick up? Who's going to be the diamond in the rough and who's going to be a one week wonder? The Robin Sports Waiver Wire Gems will give you our take on the week's most noticeable stat lines. The goal of this column is to help you decide between the guys most likely to be available on your free agent wire. Here's how we'll break them down:
Buried Treasure - These guys really have some potential and they're players you should definitely consider adding to your team. The guys listed in the "No Brainers" section are those that I'm betting are already long gone in your league.
Fool's Gold - Don't get caught up in one week of success. These are guys that you'd be better off staying away from.
Lets start with the gems, THE BURIED TREASURE! The Week 4 stat line is in parenthesis.
Buried Treasure
Andre Davis, Hou WR - (5 rec, 117 rec yds, 1 TD) For the second straight week Davis has been the leading receiver for the Texans in the absence of stud WR Andre Johnson (knee). Andre Davis obviously has some chemistry with QB Matt Schaub and he seems to have a very good chance to remain as the No. 2 WR in Houston after Andre Johnson returns for two major reasons: rookie Jacoby Jones (shoulder) is banged up and Head Coach Gary Kubiak has openly given Davis a vote of confidence.
Daunte Culpepper, Oak QB - (75 pass yds, 2 pass TD, 0 INT, 28 rush yds, 3 rush TD) There may be a stirring of the echoes this Fall and it's not coming from South Bend. Culpepper may have started to resurrect his prolific career as he has now led the Raiders to consecutive victories. The weapons are there for Daunte in LaMont Jordan, Jerry Porter, Ronald Curry, and company. Culpepper should retain the QB duties as long as he continues to play well and looks like an excellent bye week replacement for fantasy owners.
Dwayne Bowe, KC WR - (8 rec, 164 rec yds, 1 TD) Somebody's gotta catch some balls in Kansas City and it's looking like that somebody is rookie Dwayne Bowe. His performance last week came on the heels of 5 catches for 71 yards in Week 3. Take a definite flyer on Bowe if he's still available in your league.
Desmond Clark, Chi TE - (7 rec, 44 rec yds, 1 TD) Clark and QB Brian Griese hooked up 7 times! For those of you keeping score at home, that's only 2 less catches than he had in the first 3 games combined. Clark looks like a nice cheap replacement or fill-in for underachievers like Randy McMichael and Vernon Davis until they return to form.
Michael Pittman & Earnest Graham, TB RB - (Pittman: 90 rush yds; Graham: 48 rush yds, 1 rush TD, 1 rec, 8 rec yds) With Cadillac in the repair shop for the rest of the season, Jon Gruden will go with a RB platoon of Pittman and Graham. My opinion on these guys is to pick up either one of them with the hopes that one of them may claim the job outright at some point in time. If both are available and you only want one, go with Graham because he has 3 TDs in the last 2 games.
No Brainers: Patrick Crayton, Dal WR; Brett Favre, GB QB; Jerry Porter, Oak WR; Greg Jennings, GB WR; James Jones, GB WR
Now let's take a look at THE FOOL'S GOLD
Fool's Gold
Justin Fargas, Oak RB - (179 rush yds) Kudos for Fargas for coming up big after Jordan's injury (back). Fantasy owners shouldn't waste their time with Fargas though, because Dominic Rhodes will be back after the bye week (a.k.a. the next time the Raiders play) and Jordan may also be back in Week 6 as well.
Kenny Watson, Cin RB - (55 rush yds, 2 rec, 8 rec yds) The Bengals have a bye during Week 5 and Rudi should be fully recovered by the next time the Bengals take the field. As such, I don't see much use for Watson in the coming weeks and, therefore, he does not warrant a fantasy roster spot. Enough said.
Bryant Johnson, Ari WR - (3 rec, 37 rec yds) Even with Anquan Boldin missing the game, Johnson still couldn't muster up any real fantasy points. Boldin is still day-to-day with the hip injury, but Bryant doesn't seem worth owning at this point. If I were you I'd try to snag Andre Davis, Dwayne Bowe, or one of the other attractive free agent WRs.
Kurt Warner, Ari QB - (132 pass yds, 1 pass TD) Leinhart is still the guy in Arizona and that was highlighted by his return to the game (and game-winning drive against the Steelers). As long as their platooning, neither is worth owning because there are plenty of QBs out there that will put up more fantasy points (Culpepper, Harrington, etc).
Dominic Rhodes, Oak RB - Rhodes has completed his suspension and will join the RB corp in Oakland after the bye week. LaMont Jordan should still be the unquestioned starter, which means that Rhodes will see some carries, but not enough be have fantasy relevance. Furthermore, if Jordan still has back issues, it's more likely that Justin Fargas will see more carries rather than Rhodes taking over the entire load.
