Need help sifting through the big performances from guys on your league's waiver wire to figure out who you want to pick up? Who's going to be the diamond in the rough and who's going to be a one week wonder? The Robin Sports Waiver Wire Gems will give you our take on the week's most noticeable stat lines. The goal of this column is to help you decide between the guys most likely to be available on your free agent wire. Here's how we'll break them down:
Buried Treasure - These guys really have some potential and they're players you should definitely consider adding to your team. The guys listed in the "No Brainers" section are those that I'm betting are already long gone in your league.
Fool's Gold - Don't get caught up in one week of success. These are guys that you'd be better off staying away from.
Lets start with the gems, THE BURIED TREASURE! The Week 9 stat line is in parenthesis.
Buried Treasure
Andre Hall, Den RB - (7.2 ypc) With the knee injury to Selvin Young, there is a good possibility that Hall will see some time in the backfield this week. If you have Young, go ahead and pick up Hall. Going against the Bears defense any running back should be able to have a good game as long as the passing game remains solid.
Kolby Smith, KC RB - This team has had a revolving door at the running back position. With the recent retirement of Priest and the injury to LJ, Smith is now the go to guy in KC. Going against the Raiders there should not be too much of a drop off in production. The Raiders defense ranks near the bottom of the NFL defending the run, so consider Smith if you are in need of a back or had Priest. With the Kansas City QB still wet under the ears, he will get his fair share of carries.
Joey Harrington, Atl QB - (184 completions and 1876 yards) Talk about a roller coaster ride. Harrington can put up decent numbers if the Falcons would just leave him in the lineup every week. This week against Indy, he will have plenty of chances to throw. Atlanta will be down most of the game which equates to throwing the ball. Yes, the INT's might come into play, but he will definitely throw for a couple hundred yards. If you are desperate for a QB, take a look his way.
Mike Furrey, Det WR - (39 receptions and 465 yrds) Furrey continues to be a solid player for Detroit. The offense is pass friendly so he gets ample opportunities despite being the odd man out. This week against the Packers will be a tough contest, especially with the DB's the Packers have. The Lions are going to be playing from behind like last week against the Giants, so expect them to throw 45+ times. Odds say that any wide out for Detroit is a pretty good pickup this week.
Now let's take a look at THE FOOL'S GOLD
Fool's Gold
Daunte Culpepper, Oak QB - (1161 yards 5 TD's) - This guy is the definition of fools gold. Going against the Chiefs this week and the fact that the Raiders gave a huge contract to Russell equates to one thing for Culpepper, the bench. Yeah he had a solid game last week, but don't count on it ever again. Take those 344 yards off his stats and you wouldn't even look his way! I think the Raiders are going to give the offense to Russell, and they should. Adios Culpepper!
Ronald Curry, Oak WR - (4 catches last week for 120 yards and a TD) - He hasn't seen these stats in a long time. Although he has put a couple good games together this year you cannot count on a consistent effort from the former Tarheel QB. When the Raiders switch to Russell don't expect any receiver to go for big yards, unless they get the YAC. This offense is going to suffer under a rookie QB, as if it isn't already....
Justin Gage, Ten WR - (32 grabs and 1 TD) Last week Gage posted 66 yards against the Broncos. That isn't too bad given the Broncos pass defense. This week he has the Bengals defense to deal with. Not a bad matchup but he still won't do too much. Gage has never been a solid receiver in the NFL and I am not sold on Vince and how well he can manage the offense. If your looking for a miracle, then pickup Gage but that's about the extent of his worth.
